The New York Mets took on the Atlanta Braves in their first Spring Training game of the season. Under new manager Terry Collins the Mets are looking for a better performance from every player on the team. The Mets as a team finished 4th in the National League Eastern Division with a 79-83 record. The pitchers did well last season, but the offense of the team struggled to get the job done. Many games were lost due to lack of run support. David Wright played well as he hit 29 homeruns and knocked in 103 RBI’s. He led in most of the Mets offensive categories last season. The Mets are looking for the same production for him as he is expected to have a great year.
The game was played at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The Mets started Jenrry Mejia who is their best prospect in their system. He played at the MLB level at the beginning of the season and at the end. He went 2 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 run (on an error). He also struck out 3 batters in his Spring Training debut. Fernando Martinez hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game 2-2. In the bottom of the 10th Willie Harris hit a 2-run homerun to tie the game 5-5. The game would end in a 5-5 tie. The Mets made some great plays on both sides of the field. David Wright made a excellent stop to throw out Eric Hinske. The Mets hope that this season will be better then the last.
