Mets Spring Training Recap

The New York Mets came into Spring training with concerns about Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez. Both of whom were released by the Mets a couple of weeks ago. They really overshadowed the good Spring the Mets had. The Mets have been a much better team and from the looks of thing may be a team to watch this season.

Spring Training Notes:

  • Carlos Beltran was a huge concern this Spring as he was sent over to right field. He was set back as he had some problems with his knee. He returned and is looking better every game he has played. The Mets will need a great year out of Beltran who is in his final year of his contract. If he can produce on both sides of the field he can possibly lead the team to the playoffs.
  • Jose Reyes is playing well this Spring and is starting to look like the Reyes of old. His ability to get on base and steal bases is very important to the team. Reyes is hitting .291 average on the Spring including two stolen bases in 18 games this Spring. He continues to play better and better each game the Mets have played. His presence makes the Mets that much dangerous on the field and up at-bat.
  • Ike Davis has made an impact for the Mets that wasn’t expected. Last season he hit 19 homeruns and 71 RBI’s. He continues to grow and is looking more controlled at the plate. He will be the everyday starting first baseman for the Mets this season.
  • Josh Thole is the starting catcher for the Mets and is looking to  get even better this season. He has become a great hitter and catcher this Spring and is looking to have an amazing year.
  • The pitching staff is filled with veterans and young guys. New pitchers include Chris Young, Chris Capuano, and Taylor Buchholz. Each of these guys are bringing a new thing to the Mets because they have experience at this level. The Mets have a lot of upside this year. No one is talking about them, but trust me they will be talking about them at the end of the season.
  • Jason Bay is currently in New York receiving further news about his ribs. Bay missed the rest of the season after he ran into a wall against the L.A. Dodgers. Bay is trying to return to his old form and lead the Mets to a great season.
