The New York Knicks will begin their offseason now that they are out of the playoff race. They have to decide what they are going to do with Donnie Walsh before April 30th.
The Knicks would not have Amar'e Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony if it wasn’t for the hard work of Walsh. He was able to get the Knicks under the salary cap which allowed them to get Stoudemire. He worked really hard to get the Knicks back to competitive basketball. He should be resigned only because it is the right thing to do especially since he hasn’t done anything wrong. At least give him two more years to prove that the Knicks are going to be an elite team.
Will Chauncey Billups get his option picked up and earn $14 million next year? That is the question the Knicks will have to ponder for the next month or so. He can be bought out for $4 million, but will the Knicks do that. The positives of buying out Billups would be to get a good free agent. The downsize to it would the team would lose a good player with excellent leadership and late game heroics. My hope is for them to bring Billups back because the free agency market will not have any guards of his quality. He can be let go after next season so that the Knicks could make a run at Chris Paul or Deron Williams.
The last but more important thing the Knicks will have to look at is the center position. The Knicks played without a true threat for most of the season. Possible additions could be JaVale McGee or DeAndre Jordan. Both would be very affordable and would work perfectly in the Knicks system. Both players play good defense and are young and very athletic. I wouldn’t prefer one over the other because they have the same similarities.
The Knicks will begin a long offseason with many concerns and questions. But one thing remains they have two superstars to build around and try to win an NBA Championship.
