Mets lose season opener 6-2

The New York Mets took on the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium. The Mets sent Mike Pelfrey to the mound to face the Marlin hitters. Johan Santana would have been in Pelfrey’s place, but he will be out for the first half of the season. Pelfrey looked good early on, but in the 4th inning Pelfrey gave up a grand slam to John Buck. Buck played great in his debut with the Marlins as he went 2-4 including a double. Pelfrey struggled in the 4th and was pulled after throwing 97 pitches. He looked nervous and fell behind in the count in mostly every matchup. Pelfrey now has an ERA of 10.38.
Josh Johnson was the Marlins pitcher and he didn’t disappoint  as he put together 6 scoreless innings and also didn’t allow any hits along that stretch. Johnson did allow 3 hits and 2 runs in the 7th inning. He did a great job in keeping his team in position to win the game. He has started another season looking unhittable.
Blaine Boyer and Pedro Beato both had scoreless innings of work. Taylor Buchholz gave up a homerun to Logan Morrison in the bottom of the 8th.
Carlos Beltran had an RBI double and scored on an error. He looked great both in the field and at the plate. The Mets are hoping for great things out of Beltran, who is in his final year of a 7-year contract.
This was the first lost on opening day in five years. The Mets will continue their series tomorrow night against the Marlins. Jon Niese will get the start for the Mets.
