Mets beat Nationals 6-3

The New York Mets continued their series against the Washington Nationals tonight at Nationals Park. The Mets were trying to win their sixth straight game and second in two days. R.A. Dickey started for the Mets as he vied for his second win of the season. Dickey has been struggling with his knuckleball and hasn’t been able to consistently throw it for strikes. Dickey was able to go 6.2 innings allowing just two earned runs on eight hits. He pitched much better and was able to get outs when he need them most. Dickey ended up getting a no decision after the Mets failed to get him the lead with him pitching.
Tom Gorzelanny pitched a great game as he allowed just one run over 6.1 innings of work. He dominated the Met hitters and shut them down. He only threw 85 pitches and was taken out of the game by Jim Riggleman. If he stayed in the game the Mets would have ultimately lost the game.
Game Notes:
  • Daniel Murphy came up in the top of the 8th with two outs and hit a pinch hit homerun. This was his first homerun of the season and it tied the game at 2-2. Then in the top of the 9th Murphy came up with two men on in scoring position and knocked both runners in to give the Mets a 6-3 lead. He was the hero that helped the Mets capture their sixth straight win.
  • Jose Reyes was wrongly called out on a triple attempt in the top of the 8th inning. If he was called safe the Mets would have gone up a run, but that call didn’t matter once the game was over.
  • The Mets relief pitchers combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 6th save of the season.
  • The Mets knocked in 4 runs off of Nationals reliever Sean Burnett.
  • Pedro Beato received his first major league win and his first as a New York Met.
