Beltran hits three homeruns in the Mets 9-5 victory over the Rockies

Coors Field

The New York Mets played the Colorado Rockies to finish up their final game of the series. The Mets were without two prime starters in Ike Davis and David Wright. Davis was placed on the Disable List after spraining his left ankle in a collision with David Wright. The Mets started Willie Harris and Justin Turner. Other notable news was that pitcher Chris Young will miss the rest of the season as he will have surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder. This was terrible news for the Mets because he has pitched so well for them this season.

The game started with a delay, but got underway just after 5:20 PM. Jon Niese went 6.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits. He struggled toward the end, but was able to get more than enough run support to get the win. Niese gave up two solo homeruns to Jonathan Herrera and Todd Helton.

Ubaldo Jimenez wasn’t sharp in any way compared to last season. He went 3.2 innings allowing five runs on three hits. He didn’t give up many hits, but he walked six batters. He gave up a two-run shot to Carlos Beltran in the first inning. The Rockies made it interesting, but the Mets scored every time they had to.

Game Notes:

  • Carlos Beltran stole the show with his historic batting as he clubbed three homeruns to tie a Met franchise record. He is now the 8th Met to achieve this honor, all of which have come on the run. Beltran is now the leader for the Mets in homeruns and RBI’s.
  • Willie Harris reached base four times as he drew three walks.
  • Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 11th straight save and he had his third consecutive 1-2-3 inning.
