Mets bullpen blows game; Phillies win 5-2

The New York Mets took on the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field tonight. The Mets were coming off a lost and were trying to get a win against the NL leading Phillies. The Mets started Mike Pelfrey who is pitching at his best right now. He faced off against Cole Hamels who has struggled against the Mets for his entire career.

Pelfrey pitched 7.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits. This was a great performance by him, but the bullpen couldn’t hold off the Phillies. Pelfrey is pitching much better now than when he started.

Hamels went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He pitched great and his team was able to get him the lead for the win. Ryan Howard broke the tie with a two run double.

The Mets bullpen has been roughed up during their losing streak. The starters have been good, but the bullpen has been terrible. The bullpen gave up three earned runs. The only pitcher that didn’t give up a run was Tim Byrdak. He did allow the inherited runner to score. The Mets bullpen has to get their game back on track otherwise the season will be a terrible one.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 2 of 4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Ryan Madson recorded his 11th save of the season.
