Pelfrey dazzles in the Mets 5-2 win over the Giants

Citi Field 2

The New York Mets finished up their series against the San Francisco Giants Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. The Giants took the first two games from the Mets and had the Mets hungry for a win. The Mets welcomed Mike Pelfreyback Jason Bay who missed two games due to the birth of his son. Lucas Duda was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for Bay. Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets as he looked for his second win of the season. It has been a real struggle for him this season as he hasn’t looked good in most of his starts this season. Today was Pelfrey’s best start of the season as he went 7.2 innings allowing four hits on two runs. This was the best game for Pelfrey as he pounded the strike zone early and changed the eyelevel of the batters. He should have just allowed the homerun, but the error by Jose Reyes allowed the Giants to get another run.

Jonathan Sanchez went out for Giants as he went 5.0 innings, allowed five hits, and walked six batters. Jonathan SanchezSanchez wasn’t as sharp today as he normally is. Sanchez gave up a two-run homerun to Carlos Beltran in the 5th inning to extend the Giants deficit to three runs. The Mets looked much better at the plate in this game and drove in enough runs to give Pelfrey the necessary run support to win the game. The Giants finished their road trip 6-6 and lost the sweep against the Mets.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 1-4 with two RBI’s and two strikeouts. He is starting to swing the bat much better with RISP (Runners in Scoring Position) and is becoming more consistent with runners on base.
  • Jason Bay went 1-3 including a double and two strikeouts. The Mets are now 8-3 since Bay returned to the lineup.
  • Carlos Beltran went 1-4 as he hit a two-run homerun in the 5th inning. He is starting to get hits that are impacting the game. He is starting to look like the Beltran of old.
  • Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 7th save of the year. He went 1.1 innings as he walked two batters and allowed one hit. He didn’t allow any runs to score, but he still allowed the Giants the opportunity to tie and or take the lead. He has pitched great since his blown save and is getting the Mets some much needed saves.
