The New York Mets took on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight at Citi Field. This was the first game of a three game series. This game started a 15 game streak against the American League. The Mets were coming off a very successful road trip as they won six of ten. They have paired their hitting and pitching together which makes for a successful ball club.
Tonight the Mets found themselves trailing the entire game. They would tie the game multiple times, but never could get the lead. The Mets scored on an Angel Pagan RBI single in the 2nd inning tying the game at one. Then in the third inning Angel Pagan singled home another run to tie the game at two. Pagan swung the bat really well with runners in scoring position tonight. He continues to swing the bat much better and is delivering for this team. Ronny Paulino pulled the Mets within a run after he doubled home a run. The Mets still trailed by one run after eight innings. In the bottom of the 9th the Mets were able to get Reyes and Turner on with no outs. Carlos Beltran came up and struck out and then Daniel Murphy came up and struck out. It was all left up to Angel Pagan with two men on and two outs. Pagan would strike out and the Mets would lose 4-3.
The Angels played like the Mets of late in which they hit for average and not power. They were able to clump together hits to score some runs. They were able to keep the pressure on the Mets and not let them take the lead.
Chris Capuano started for the Mets as he looked for his third consecutive win. He didn’t have his best game of the season, but he was able to keep the Mets within striking distance. Capuano went six innings allowing eight hit on three runs (two earned). He also had five strikeouts and three walks. He wasn’t able to keep the leadoff hitter off base and each time it seemed to come back and bite him. Capuano was pinned with the lost after the Mets failed to rally.
Joel Pineiro started for the Angels and he was looking for his 100th career win. He would put himself in position for the win after his 6.1 innings of work. He allowed six hits on two runs with four strikeouts and three walks. He pitched one of his better games of the season as he was able to stifle the Met batters and never allowed them to cluster together hits. Pineiro would earn his 100th career win with tonight’s victory.
Game Notes:
- Bobby Parnell worked two innings allowing a run on two hits. He continues to improve despite giving up the one run. The thing to look at here is the fact that he didn’t allow many hits and his control was much better as he didn’t walk any batters. He needs to keep up this progression in order to earn a position as a reliever.
- Jason Bay went 1 of 4 with a run scored. He continues to show minor improvements over the last four games. His bat seems to be moving like how it used to and he is getting a lot of contact rather than striking out. The Mets need his bat in order for them to be a legit team down the stretch.
- Jose Reyes went 0 of 4 with a walk and really was over matched tonight. He was able to get himself in scoring position, but his teammates failed to get him home.
