The New York Mets opened a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics at Citi Field. The Mets were looking to rebound from a series lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Mets were told earlier today by Jose Reyes’ agent that Reyes would not negotiate any contract extensions until the end of the season. This doesn't mean that Reyes will not sign with the Mets it’s just that Reyes doesn't want any distractions. Reyes went 0 of 4 as he has found himself in a tiny slump.
Tonight Dillon Gee was looking to remain undefeated as he took on the Athletic hitters. Gee pitched his worst game of the season as he allowed four runs on three hits. He didn’t give up many hits, but he walked a career-high six batters. He really labored out there for the Mets tonight as he struggled with his command. Gee has pitched so great for the Mets this season and this was the first time he was knocked out earlier due to a terrible start. Gee will bounce back from this and be better in his next start.
Josh Outman started for the Athletics as he looked to collect his third win. Outman outpitched the Mets tonight as he went six innings allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits. He gave up a solo homerun to Jason Bay in the 6th inning. Outman really pitched with control and held the Mets lineup in check. He has had two consecutive great starts for the A’s and continues to pitch well after being called up earlier in the season.
Jason Bay was red-hot tonight as he went 3 for 3 with a homerun and an RBI triple. Bay finally had a nice game and is starting to swing the bat very well. If the Mets can get Bay to hit on a consistent basis they will be alright while Davis and Wright remain on the disable list. Bay just needs to stay focused and continue to help this team.
The pitching for the Mets struggled with walks tonight as they walked nine batters.
The Mets were able to get the bases loaded in the 8th inning with two outs, but Josh Thole grounded out. The Mets struggled to cluster together hits and drive in runs to pull themselves back into the game. They failed to get clutch hits when it mattered most. The Mets will look to rebound tomorrow as R.A. Dickey faces Gio Gonzalez.
