The New York Mets continued their road trip as they traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates. The Mets were coming off a successful series against the Brewers as they went 2-1 in Milwaukee. The Brewers have the best home record in the majors and for the Mets to win a series there is remarkable. The Mets offense is on fire right now and they are putting together hit after hit and is making pitching to them hard. The Mets lack power, but they are able to get hits and get runs.
Dillon Gee started for the Mets as he vied for his seventh win of the season. Gee was trying to become the first rookie pitcher to start 7-0 since Jered Weaver in 2006. Gee had his pitches working again tonight. After a rough beginning for him he was able to settle down and pitch a great game. Gee went eight innings allowing one run on eight hits. He struck out five batters and used his pitches very well. The Mets are excited about this young man who continues to make his name know. He pitched himself into jams, but was able to pitch his way out of trouble.
Charlie Morton pitched for the Pirates and was knock out early by the Met hitters. Morton went four innings allowing nine hits on seven runs. He really struggled to get his sinker ball working. The Met hitter got hit after hit and were able to get runs. The Mets scored five runs in the fourth inning. Morton was looking for win number seven, but he wasn’t able to get it.
The Mets have done an excellent job this road series to get runs across the plate. The offense has given the pitching staff run support and in the Met losses the pitching has struggled to hold the lead. The team is playing very well right now and with the teams above them struggling they are slowly moving up in the rankings.
The Mets won this game behind an excellent pitching performance from Dillon Gee. The Mets are now 9-0 in all of Gee’s starts this season.
Game Notes:
- Jose Reyes went 3 of 5 and also hit his second homerun of the season in the 6th inning.
- Lucas Duda returned to the Mets lineup after he was called up from Triple-A Buffalo. Duda went 1 of 4 with an RBI single and a sac fly. He really helped this team win a nice game.
- Angel Pagan went 2 of 5 with a double and a triple. Pagan is swinging the bat very well since he returned back from the disabled list. He continues to be a factor in the middle of the lineup.
- Josh Thole went 3 of 5 with an RBI single in the the 4th inning. He finally had a nice night hitting the ball and showed that he could get runners home in scoring position.
- Justin Turner went 1 of 4 with a two-run single in the 4th inning. He continues to knock in runs for this team and is becoming more important to the team. His hitting hasn’t gone unnoticed and he is starting to prove that he belongs in this league.
