The Mets went to Detroit to take on the Tigers at Comerica Park. The Mets were coming off a very successful series against the first place Texas Rangers. They were able to win the finally two games against them and scored a total of 22 runs in those final two games. Their offense has caught complete fire and they are looking great at the plate. Tonight the Mets would continue their run scoring barrage as they would plate together a seven run 4th inning. And in that 4th inning the Mets Jason Bay would hit the first grand slam in nearly two years. The first since Angel Pagan’s slam on August 1, 2009 and the first in 299 games. Then in the next inning Carlos Beltran would his his 9th career grand slam and give the Mets a 13-0 lead.
R.A. Dickey started for the Mets and pitched a very good game. Dickey went seven innings allowing three runs on nine hits. Dickey was able to get two key double plays to end the threats the Tigers had. The runs came on a two-run homerun by Austin Jackson and a solo homerun by Andy Dirks. Dickey was able to get his pitches over for strikes. He walked three batters, but was able to pitch around the base runners.
Rick Porcello started for the Tigers and he was looking to get his seventh win of the season. Tonight Porcello pitched possibly his worst game of the season as he allowed seven runs on eleven hits. He struggled to get outs and look terrible as he threw his pitches down the middle. The Tigers offense never had the chance to get their starters the lead as the Mets were able to get the early lead.
Daniel Schlereth came in trying to stop the Mets, but he too struggled to get outs. Schlereth gave up the two grand slams as he went 1.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits. The Tigers have to be concerned with his effort tonight.
Jose Reyes had another great game as he went 5 of 5 with a triple, double, single, and a walk. He also scored three runs. Reyes was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle and Terry Collins took Reyes out in the 7th inning. Collins replaced Reyes with Ruben Tejada Reyes continues to get hits and tonight’s triple gave him 15 triples for the season. The Mets are playing very well on the road right now and they continue to win very impressively.
The Met starters all had a hit in this game and the Mets bats proved to be deadly in this game. With this win the Mets pulled themselves over .500 for the first time since the first week of the season. The offense also had 18 hits in this huge win. The Mets will play the Tigers tomorrow looking for their fourth straight win.
