Mets bullpen fails again; Lose 6-3

The New York Mets faced the Atlanta Braves tonight at Citi Field. The Mets were trying to capture the first game of the series and at least avoid a sweep. The Mets handed the ball to Jon Niese who would pitch his 50th career game. Niese pitched a great game as he went 7.2 innings allowing two runs on eight hits. He also had seven strikeouts and walked one batter. He pitched possibly one of his best games of the season. He had his curveball working tonight as he threw it for a first pitch strike. His pitches really worked off each other tonight. The Mets gave up the lead and Niese wasn’t able to get a win.

Derek Lowe went for the Braves and was trying to capture his 4th win of the season. Lowe started great, but he quickly lost his 1-0 advantage. He gave up three runs in the 4th inning and his team never got him the lead for a win. Lowe went six innings allowing three runs on seven hits.

Francisco Rodriguez came in to pitch in a tie ballgame in the 9th inning. He would give up a homerun to Eric Hinske to break the tie and put him in line for the lost. Rodriguez also gave up a two-run double to give the Braves a 6-3 lead.

With this lost the Mets set a new Major League Baseball record with six 7 inning or later blown leads.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes had his 27th multiple hit game of the season. As well as his 9th triple of the year. Reyes continues to prove why the Mets need to find a way to keep him here in New York. Reyes went 2 of 4 with a run scored.
