The New York Mets came into the afternoon on a two game losing streak. Terry Collins went off after last nights terrible lost. The team came out today very sluggish and saw the Pirates go up by seven runs. Beltran would hit a three-run homerun to cut the Pirate lead to four. Then in the 6th inning the Mets were able to bring in four runs to tie the game. The Mets took the lead in the 8th inning on a Ruben Tejada sacrifice-fly.
Mike Pelfrey went five innings allowing seven runs on ten hits. He really struggled for the Mets and for the second time this season the Mets were able to come back for him. He gave up seven runs against the Phillies and the offense was able to at least get him a no decision. Pelfrey was pitching very well for the Mets during his last five starts. His performance was awful today and he was lucky to walk away with another no decision.
Paul Maholm was given a 7-0 lead and gave it all away as he allowed seven runs to score and was charged with six of the seven runs. He was pitching great up until the Beltran three-run homerun. Then he let it all go as he allowed the Mets to score four runs in the 6th inning.
The Mets were able to comeback and get a win. The comments of Terry Collins really set in on all the players. Everyone performed better and it showed in their come from behind win. This was their biggest comeback since June 30th, 2000.
Game Notes:
- Carlos Beltran had a big day for the Mets as he went 2 of 4 with a three-run homerun and a double. He hit the ball hard today and is swinging the bat well.
- Ruben Tejada went 1 of 3 with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. He was the difference for the Mets and was outstanding on defense as well.
- Jason Isringhausen got the win for the Mets, his first win with the team since 1999.
- Francisco Rodriguez notched his 16th save of the season. He did give up a run, but was able to work around it for the save.
