The Mets continued their series against the Tigers tonight looking for their fourth straight win. The Mets won big last night as they hit two grand slams to propel them to victory. Tonight the Mets offense came out hitting on all cylinders as they scored four runs to start the game. They came out with a strategy to hit and run which they did. The Mets would add one run in the third and three runs in the fifth inning. They were in control for the most part tonight, but Capuano, Beato, and Byrdak kept the Tigers around.
Chris Capuano made his scheduled start tonight after experiencing some pain in his right side. Capuano was given five early runs before surrendering a solo homerun to Ryan Raburn. Capuano would then allow a solo homerun to Miguel Cabrera. The score was 5-2 at this point before the Mets added three runs to extend their lead to five. But Capuano would allow the Tigers to creep back in the game as he allowed a three-run homerun from Miguel Cabrera. Capuano went five innings allowing five runs on six hits. He gave up three homeruns that could have really hurt the Mets, but the Tigers never cut the lead any closer. The Mets needed every run to win this game and they were able to do that.
Phil Coke pitched for the Tigers looking to get his second win of the season. Coke would have a terrible performance for the third time in a row. He continues to be unproductive for the Tigers and the team is starting to lose its’ patient with him. Coke went four innings allowing eight runs on ten hits. Coke threw 79 pitches in his four innings of work. The Tigers have to figure out what is wrong with Coke otherwise they will lose every time he starts.
The offense was alive tonight as the Mets were able to get everyone of their starters a base hit for the second game in a row. This team is hitting very well and teams are starting to notice the Mets beating up on good teams. The Mets offense would tact on two runs in 7th and just another four runs to give the Mets a 14-8 lead. The Mets set a franchise record with 52 runs in a four game span. And had a season high 20 hits. The Mets scored all of their runs without a homerun.
The Tigers would make the game more interesting as Andy Dirks homered off Tim Byrdak. The Mets lead was trimmed to two runs and Bobby Parnell came in to end the inning. The Mets pitching gave up five homeruns which was their highest total since September 27, 2006 which was against the Atlanta Braves.
The Mets pitching really struggled tonight as they gave up a combined nine runs. They really struggled even after getting plenty of runs. This has to be a concern for the Mets as they go along against tough teams. And even with the big lead the Mets were forced to use six pitchers.
