The New York Mets faced the Oakland Athletics tonight at Citi Field. This was the second game of a three game series. The Mets were coming off a 7-3 lost in which their pitchers walked a total of nine batters. That was a tough game for them as they were shut down offensively as well. Tonight the Mets were trying to keep pace with the Nationals who are the hottest team in baseball. The Mets were trying to tie the series at one game a piece. The Mets scored the first run of the game on a Lucas Duda RBI single. The Athletics would tie the game in the 5th inning on a Kurt Suzuki solo homerun. The game was tied until the 8th inning when Justin Turner bought in Jose Reyes with an RBI single after Reyes tripled.
R.A. Dickey pitched a great game as he went eight innings allowing one run on three hits. He pitched a spectacular game as he dominated the strike zone and struck out nine batters. He really used his fastball to get ahead in the count and then used his knuckleball to get the batters off balance. He commanded his pitches very well and should have gotten the win.
Gio Gonzalez started for the Athletics looking to capture his seventh win of the season. Gonzalez didn’t pitch a bad game, but his team struggled to get him runs. He pitched seven strong innings allowing just one run on four hits. He really did an excellent job in getting the Met batters out. He struck out eight Met hitters and really over matched them at certain points in the game.
Francisco Rodriguez would pitch the ninth inning trying to get his 20th save of the season. Rodriguez would blow his second consecutive save opportunity given to him. The blown save really overshadowed Dickey’s great performance.
The Mets and Athletics went into extra innings and both teams went scoreless until the 13th inning. Justin Turner was hit by the pitch that would force in a run. This was their first walk-off win this season. Turner somehow finds a way to get the runs home.
Bobby Parnell gets credit with the win.
