This afternoon the New York Mets will finish up their four game series against the Pirates at Citi Field. The Mets won the first game, but dropped the last two. They are looking to end the series in a 2-2 split and avoid losing another game. The Mets are looking to Mike Pelfrey to keep up the great starting pitching. Pelfrey has a 3-4 record with a 5.00 ERA. His numbers have really improved since the Mets started using Ronny Paulino behind the plate. In his last start Pelfrey struck out a season high six Phillies. He pitched a great game, but wasn’t able to get a win due to a melt down from the bullpen.
Paul Maholm will make his 12th start for the Pirates today. He is coming off a complete game three-hit shutout. He has pitched good for the Pirates despite his numbers. Maholm has a record of 2-7 and a ERA of 3.18. He has gone at least seven innings in five of his last ten starts. Expect him to make the Met hitters work for runs.
One other thing to note is that Terry Collins isn’t happy with the execution of his players. He was angry last night in his postgame interview and it look as if he was finally frustrated with the team. The Mets made some careless mistakes that made it hard for them to get out the 7th inning. They have to get back on track both in the field and swinging the bat. This team will be in the bottom of the National League if they continue this downward spiral.
Jose Reyes will play tonight after missing the last three games due to the death of his grandmother. The Mets also placed reliever Taylor Buchholz on the disabled list with a “fatigued shoulder”. Reyes took Buchholz roster spot since he is now on the DL.
