The New York Mets were looking for a series sweep against the Detroit Tigers this afternoon. The Mets were looking for their fifth straight win all on the road. The team scored 52 runs over four games and were trying to do the same today.
Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets as he looked to continue the Mets great starting pitching. He would have an awful performance that should have been worst, but he was able to get out of a bases loaded jam. The Mets have to be concerned with Pelfrey’s effort and his inconsistency. He has been hurt the Mets countless times this season in his terrible starts. They have to figure out how to handle him and go from there. He went 4.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) and walked five batters. He looked bad out there and he struggled to throw strikes. I have no idea if Thole and Pelfrey just struggle together or if it’s just a coincidence. But Pelfrey has to pitch better because this is the big leagues and things like this shouldn’t matter.
Justin Verlander started for the Tigers looking to capture his seventh straight win. Verlander was strong today as he went seven innings allowing just one run on seven hits. He threw 120 pitches and continues to be the best pitcher in baseball. The Mets were able to get his pitch count up which hampered his ability to go further in the game. The only run he gave up came on a Daniel Murphy solo homerun.
Manny Acosta left today’s game with a hyperextended wrist. Acosta made a spectacular play to get an out, but he hurt himself in the process.
Game Notes:
- Daniel Murphy went 2 of 4 with a solo homerun and a double.
- Carlos Beltran went 1 of 4 with a solo homerun in the 8th inning. This was Beltran’s 12 homerun of the season which leads the team.
