Jason Bay clubs two homeruns in Mets 6-0 shutout of the Dodgers

The New York Mets played their second game of a four game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets were coming off a win in which they won 5-2. The Mets were looking for their third straight win. The Mets were without Jose Reyes for the third consecutive game and it seems as if Reyes may return later this week.

Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets looking to get on track after his horrific start against the Detroit Tigers. Pelfrey came out pitching more inside to hitters and pitching down in the zone. He had a very successful outing tonight as he was able to get out of three separate pitching jams. Pelfrey was strong tonight and was able to avoid cracking under the pressure. He would leave nine runners on base and never gave up any runs. Pelfrey has now improved his record to 2-7 on the road. Pelfrey went six innings allowing no runs on five hits. He really gave the Mets the opportunity to win tonight with his nice performance.

Ted Lilly started for the Dodgers as he looked to get his sixth win of the season and snap out of a three game losing streak. Lilly pitched well up until the two-run homerun to Carlos Beltran in the 5th inning. He wouldn’t get any run support to get a win and was pinned with his fourth straight lost. Lilly went six innings allowing three runs on six hits. Lilly also gave up a solo homerun to Jason Bay to push the Dodgers deficit to three runs.

Jason Bay displayed power that Mets fans have been waiting to see from him. He clubbed two homeruns tonight to help power his team to the victory. Bay would hit his second homerun in the 8th inning which was a three-run shot off of Blake Hawksworth. This really shows Bay’s value to the Mets right now as they need every batter to play at their best. I am very excited with Bay right now simply because he is dominating pitches he was missing earlier in the season. His ability to see the ball has vastly improved as the season has gone on. The Mets have to be excited to see Bay finally playing at his best.

The Mets continue to play great even with all of the injuries. They have now won three straight games without Jose Reyes and aren’t missing a beat. This team has shown that they step their game up even if their number one players aren’t there. I think that makes this team enjoyable to watch because everything is a surprise. The Mets have to continue to win in order to get closer in the wild card race.
