Marlins beat Mets 8-5

The New York Mets continued their series against the Florida Marlins. The Mets were looking to take a 2-0 series lead with a win tonight after their win last night. The Mets had a successful return from David Wright as he went 2 for 5 with two RBI doubles. He really came through for the team when they needed him. He is a vital piece to this team and is a core member of the franchise. If he can continue to provide for this team he can lead this team right into the playoffs.

The Mets started Chris Capuano who went six innings allowing four runs on six hits and struck out six. Capuano was strong early on, but his terrible sixth inning in which he allowed all four runs. He gave up a RBI triple to Omar Infante to start the inning. And then he gave up a two-run homerun to Gabby Sanchez who continues to kill the Mets.  Then to make things more terrible for Capuano he gave up a solo homerun to Logan Morrison. His night came crashing down during that terrible inning that put him in position for the lost. The Mets have gotten great pitching out of Capuano, but he has struggled late in the game. If Capuano can somehow figure out how to maintain energy through the game he will be back to the level he was at.

Clay Hensley went to the mound for the Marlins looking to get his second win as a starter. He went five innings allowing two runs on four hits. He struggled with his command in the later innings as he walked four batters. Hensley struggled through this start as he gave up a two-run single to David Wright. His pitches were not strong tonight and it seemed as the game went on he started to tire very quickly. In both starts this season Hensley has only gone five innings in each of the two starts. This time he wasn’t able to shut the Mets down.

D.J. Carrasco came in to pitch the 7th inning and he gave up a run to give the Marlins a 5-3 lead. He struck out the first two batters and didn’t get any help in getting the third out. The Mets defense would allow two infield hits, a stolen base, and an error. Then after all of that he would allow a two run homerun to Gabby Sanchez, which was his second of the game. The Marlins would tact on three more runs to extend there lead to 7-3.

Ryota Igarashi came in to pitch the eighth inning and he allowed a run on two hits. This was his fourth appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.

The Mets made it interesting as they hit back-to-back homeruns with Lucas Duda and Jose Reyes. The two-runs cut the lead to 8-5. The Mets would fall short as they lost the game 8-5.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 3 for 5 including three runs scored and a stolen base. He also had a homerun in the 9th inning. This marked the 46th multiple hit game of the season for Reyes as he remarkable season continues. Reyes now has 132 hits this season.
  • Justin Turner went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Carlos Beltran went 1 for 2 including an RBI single and three walks. He reached base in all four plate appearances.
  • David Wright went 1 for 5 with a two-run single.
