Mets beat Cardinals 4-2

The Mets faced the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Citi Field to open up a three game series. The Mets welcomed back Jose Reyes who was activated from the disabled list today and Ruben Tejada was sent to Triple-A Buffalo. But travel issues with weather held Mike Nickeas back and Tejada remained on the Mets roster. Josh Thole left the team to attend the birth of his son. The Mets also had Carlos Beltran back in the lineup after he missed a few games with the flu.

Dillon Gee started for the Mets looking for his ninth win of the season. Gee pitched a well controlled game as he went seven innings allowing two runs on three hits. He did a wonderful job in limiting the amount of base runners. His pitches worked off each other and when they do he is a very tough pitcher. He gave up a long homerun to Lance Berkman who scored two runs for the Cardinals. Gee looked like the Gee from earlier in the season as he dominated hitters with his great pitches.

Kyle Lohse pitched for the Cardinals looking to get his game back on track. He really struggled to keep the Mets offense from collecting hits. Lohse went 5.2 innings allowing four runs on ten hits. He also walked three batters and struggled to keep the Mets off base. Lohse struggled to pitch as he continues to struggle through this season. He gave up a two run double to Angel Pagan to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. He was taken out with two men on as Raul Valdes came in. Valdes would give up a two run double to Daniel Murphy to extend the Met lead to 4-1. The Cardinals would never get the lead with Lohse in the game therefore giving him the lost.

The Mets were very clutch in this game when they had to be. They bounced back after Lohse came through with a single that plated a run. The Mets used their smart hitting to get across runs and they were able to get the job done despite leaving 13 men on base.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 2 of 5 in his return to the team. He also scored a run and had another multi-hit game.
  • Carlos Beltran went 3 of 3 with two walks and a run scored in his return. Beltran had two doubles and now has 30 doubles to lead the National League.
  • Justin Turner went 2 of 5 with two runs scored.
  • Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth inning to notch his first save since 2008. Isringhausen last save as a Met came on 7/6/1999.
