The New York Mets played the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight trying to get their fourth straight win and third over the Dodgers. The Mets are playing much better over the last few weeks or so and were looking to carry that success into tonight’s game. The Mets were able get a run in the 4th inning on a Lucas Duda RBI double. And in the 6th inning Carlos Beltran scored on a Kuroda wild pitch. The Mets would add two more runs in that inning on a Ruben Tejada two run double. The Mets were in control for the entire game and they were able to hold off the Dodgers from making a late come back.
Jon Niese started for the Mets looking to go to 8-7 on the season. Niese would go seven innings allowing three runs on five hits. He also struck out six batters and walked a batter. Niese really pitched well enough to get the win. He would have gave up two runs, but a blown call by the first base umpire charged Niese with the earned run. The Mets are happy that Niese was able to give them seven strong innings and preserve the bullpen. Niese continues to grow more consistent as the season goes on. He will be a dominant left-handed pitcher down the road.
Hiroki Kuroda pitched for the Dodgers as he looked to earn his seventh win of the season. Kuroda pitched well up until the sixth inning in which he gave up three runs. Kuroda went six innings allowing four runs on eight hits. He pitched well early, but fell into the Mets two out trap. The Dodgers couldn’t come through for Kuroda despite his team giving him three runs. The Dodgers haven’t given Kuroda the necessary run support for him to get more wins. They struggle in his starts and he never can get through without the support.
Bobby Parnell came in to pitch the 8th inning and he would pitch a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. He continues to pitch much better since he has become healthy. He is lighting up the radar gun with his 100 mph pitches and he is locating them which makes them hard to hit. The Mets need his effort every time they call on him and right now he is delivering for them.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth inning looking to get his 22nd save of the season. Rodriguez would strike out one batter on his way to earn save number 22.
Game Notes:
- Carlos Beltran went 2 of 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. He really put the Mets in great spots to score runs as he was able to get two lead off doubles to start the inning for the Mets.
- Lucas Duda went 2 of 4 including his RBI double in the 4th inning.
- Justin Turner went 2 of 5 including an RBI single in the 9th inning to give the Mets a two run lead.
