Mets defeat the Giants 5-2

Tonight the Mets took on the San Francisco Giants to start a three game series. The Mets were coming off a very successful trip against the Los Angeles Dodgers in which they won the series 3-1. The Mets are hoping to win this series against the Giants to pull them further up the standings.

This game had very little runs and was close throughout. The Giants took the early lead on a Nate Schierholtz sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. But the Mets would respond on an Angel Pagan two-run homerun in the fifth inning. The Mets had a 2-1 until Nate Schierholtz decided to hit a long homerun into McCovey Cove to tie the game at two a piece.

R.A. Dickey started for the Mets looking to get his fifth win of the season. Dickey would pitch a very under control game despite not getting the win. Dickey went seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. More importantly Dickey didn’t walk a batter which showed how excellent his control was. The Mets have to be very happy with Dickey and how he was able to pitch even with his minor injuries. One thing that the Mets have gotten from Dickey this season has been heart and toughness. He has never quit even with some of his major injuries and that translates to the mound. He always finds a way to get out of jams with the minimum of damage.

Ryan Vogelsong was sent to the mound to pitch for the Giants. Vogelsong was selected to the All-Star team and was looking to win his final start before the game next week. Tonight Vogelsong tried to earn his seventh win of the season and he also tried to avoid his second lost of the season. He would go seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He would also walk a career-high five batters and strikeout just two batters. He was excellent in getting runners out in scoring position and he was able to get himself out of terrible jams. The Giants were unable to get him the lead which gave Vogelsong the no decision.

Then in the 9th inning Brian Wilson came in to pitch for the Giants looking to keep the Mets off the board. The Mets sent Scott Hairston to the plate as the pinch hitter and Hairston would hit his second pinch hit homerun of the season. Wilson continues to struggle after blowing consecutive saves last week. The Giants have gotten excellent pitching from Wilson this season, but tonight was a rare off night for him.

Francisco Rodriguez would come in to pitch the bottom of the 9th inning. He would earn his 23rd save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning. Rodriguez continues to have a successful season as the Mets closer and is looking like the likely piece to be moved at the trade deadline.

Game Notes:

  • Carlos Beltran went 3 of 5 with a double and an RBI single. Beltran really stepped up his game tonight as he continues to rack up doubles. He now has 27 doubles on the season to league the National League.
  • Angel Pagan went 1 of 5 with including a two-run homerun and two runs scored. Pagan also had his 18th stolen base and reached on an error.
  • Daniel Murphy went 3 of 4 with three singles. He saw the ball really well tonight and it showed with his excellent hitting.
  • Nick Evans snapped out of a 0-23 slump with his RBI single in the 9th inning.
