Mets get fifth straight win; Beat Nationals 8-5

The New York Mets opened a series tonight against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. The Mets were coming in looking for their fifth straight win after their four game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets offense has been hitting well and at times have proved to be unstoppable. Tonight they were trying to get the job done yet again.

The Mets offense came out early wanting to win this game as they scored four first inning runs. The Mets started the scoring on a Daniel Murphy RBI single to score Jose Reyes. Followed by a Angel Pagan RBI single. Bay grounded out to score Daniel Murphy. And finally Lucas Duda hit a sacrifice fly to score David Wright.  The offense showed that they would be a factor in this one. In the fourth inning Dillon Gee singled in Lucas Duda to give the Mets a 5-0 advantage. Later in the inning Jose Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to score Ronny Paulino giving the Mets a six run lead. This team showed that they were going to win this game no matter what. The Mets would add two runs on a Ronny Paulino RBI double and a Jose Reyes RBI double. At this point the score was 8-3 with the Mets taking a commanding lead.

Dillon Gee started for the Mets looking to get his 10th win of the season. Gee would throw 6.2 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks. He was dominant early, but he lost control of his pitches in the later innings to push him out of the game. Overall he gave the Mets a nice game considering his struggles. He gave the Mets a nice outing with a quality start. He threw a few great changeups tonight that resulted in strikeouts, but when he lost command he really struggled. The Mets have to be happy that Gee was able to still get them the win.

Chien-Ming Wang started for the Nationals making his first start in over two years. Wang went just four innings allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with one walk. He struggled to start the game, but when he got in a groove he did pretty well. If the Nationals slowly work Wang back slowly he can be a great addition to their rotation.

The Nationals tacked on two runs in the 8th inning cutting the Mets lead to 8-5. Danny Espinosa and Ryan Zimmerman came up with the bases loaded in the inning and both were struck out by D.J. Carrasco. The Mets were able to hold off the Nationals and get the win.

Jason Isringhausen came in to notch his fifth save of the season career number 298. Izzy has been great so far as the new closer of the team. He is looking more and more comfortable in the ninth and is converting saves for the Mets.
