Mets hold off Reds; Win 4-2

The New York Mets played the Cincinnati Reds tonight at the Great American Ball Park. The Mets were coming off a series lost to the Florida Marlins in which they lost the final two games. The Mets have struggled with their pitching during this series, but they had the opportunity to improve tonight against the Reds.

R.A. Dickey went to the mound for the Mets looking to get his fifth win of the season. Dickey was strong tonight as he gave the Mets all he had and he really delivered. Dickey went 6.2 innings allowing two runs on eight hits. Dickey was also able to strike out seven batters in this game. He really did a great job in keeping the Mets in the game. Dickey was outstanding in getting out of jams tonight as he limited the Reds scoring with great pitching.

Mike Leake started for the Reds looking to improve on his season. Leake was strong tonight as he was able to hold the Mets scoreless until the 7th inning when Carlos Beltran tied the game with his sacrifice-fly. Leake went 6.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits. He really dominated the Met hitters as he was able to get them to pop up and ground out on his pitches.

Logan Ondrusek came in for the Reds and couldn’t hold the Mets offense down. He allowed two runs on three hits in his 0.1 inning of work. He struggled to get one out and he paid for that lack of effort. He gave up a two-run double to Daniel Murphy and an RBI double from Jason Bay. The Mets were able to take a 4-1 lead giving Dickey the opportunity to gain his fifth win.

Jason Bay’s double was his first double in 50 games which occurred on May 19th. He really saw the ball well in that at-bat as he went to the opposite field. If the Mets can get him going on a consistent basis they will be a dangerous team going down the stretch.

Tim Byrdak came in with two runners on with two outs. He faced off against Jay Bruce who had a homerun off him last season. Byrdak would strike him out to end the inning and hold the Met lead at 4-2. Byrdak pitched with aggression and a willingness to get an out.

Bobby Parnell came in to pitch the 8th inning tonight looking to rebound from his awful performance yesterday in which he allowed the Marlins to comeback and take the lead for good. He had a much better outing tonight as he was able to get the Reds hitters out despite the one walk.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 1 for 5 with a single and a run scored.
  • Justin Turner went 2 for 3 with two singles and a walk. Turner was also hit by a pitch in the 9th inning which is the 7th time he has been hit this season.
  • David Wright continued swinging the bat well as he went 2 for 5 with a run scored.
  • Daniel Murphy went 2 for 5 including an RBI double and a single.
  • Jason Isringhausen came in to pitch the ninth inning trying to earn his third save of the season. Izzy was struggling as David Wright committed a huge error to prolong the inning. But Izzy would end the game with a big strike out to earn the save.
