Mets win first game without Beltran; Beat Reds 8-2

The New York Mets continued their series against the Cincinnati Reds tonight. The Mets were without Carlos Beltran, whom they traded away earlier today. The Mets announced that Lucas Duda would get most of the playing time in right field now that Beltran is gone. So the Mets had to take the field for the first time knowing that their leader was moved.

Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets trying to just give them a great start. Pelfrey was in charge for the entire game. Pelfrey went nine innings allowing two runs on seven hits. His only mistake came on a Joey Votto homerun, but that was only a solo shot so it really didn’t hurt. Pelfrey was very great in pounding the strike zone for the entire game. This was Pelfrey’s second complete game of the season and the fourth of his career. He really did a great job in getting ahead in the count which put him in control of the at-bat. The Mets needed a great start out of him and they were able to get it with his complete game effort.

The Mets offense was on again tonight as they were able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead as Angel Pagan hit a two-run double. The Mets would plate two more runs after a Joey Votto solo homerun. Daniel Murphy doubled in Jose Reyes and then David Wright hit a sacrifice-fly to plate Willie Harris.  The Mets led 4-1 at that point in the game. Then in the 6th inning Lucas Duda hit his second homerun of the season to give the Mets a 5-1 lead. Duda is becoming more and more comfortable at the plate and is starting to find his homerun swing. David Wright blew the game wide open as he hit a three-run homerun to give the Mets a 8-1 lead. The Mets offense looked unstoppable at times as they blew the Reds out.

Bronson Arroyo started for the Reds trying to get his team back on track. Arroyo struggled to accomplish anything tonight. He went six innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He really struggled for the Reds tonight as he ERA continues to climb. The Reds haven’t been that great this season and it seems as if it’s time for them to make some moves. The Reds starting pitching in this series hasn’t been bad, but their defense has been terrible. They struggled again as they committed another error. The Reds do not look like a playoff team right now as both their pitching and defense is struggling.

Game Notes:

  • Jose Reyes went 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. He continues to have a unbelievable season as he gets yet another multiple hit game.
  • Daniel Murphy went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a RBI. He is swinging the bat really well right now as he continues to be productive for the Mets. This was his first career four hit game.
  • David Wright went 2 for 3 with four RBI’s and two runs scored. He had a three-run homerun to blow the game open.
  • Angel Pagan went 1 for 3 with a two-run double in the first inning.
