The New York Mets played their second game of a three game series tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets won last night with the final score being 4-2 in their favor. The Mets welcomed back Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes last night and they came up big in their own way.
Tonight the Mets were looking to take a commanding lead in the three game series with a win tonight. They fell behind early, but their offense was able to pick up their pitching and save the game. The Mets started their comeback after falling behind 4-0. They were able to get two runs on a Josh Thole double and a R.A. Dickey single. Then in the fifth inning Carlos Beltran hit a long homerun onto the Pepsi porch that plated two runs to tie the game at four. Beltran continues to raise his stock heading into the trading deadline and he will be a vital piece to a contending team.
R.A. Dickey went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. He struggled badly early on in the game, but was able to settle in to a nice groove to get his team in position to win the game. Dickey gave up a first inning run for the first time this season at Citi Field. He struggled, but he was able to get his pitches going. The Mets received a nice effort from Dickey as he pitched his way through a tough game. One thing that must be said is that Dickey always tries his best even when his best isn’t working. The Mets have to be happy with Dickey’s grit and toughness. Dickey had a nice game hitting as he went 2 for 2 with two singles and an RBI.
Kyle McClellan went to the mound for the Cardinals looking to snap out a terrible funk. He would pitch six innings allowing four runs on six hits. He was great until he started allowing the Mets to comeback.in the game. The Cardinals have to be really concerned with McClellan at this point in the season. He is really struggling to record outs and is giving the opposition plenty of hits. His effort can not be overlooked, but he is struggling right now.
The Mets left fielder Jason Bay left the game with a tight right hamstring. He was replaced by Willie Harris. Bay has really been a terrible signing for the Mets to this point in his contract. Not only has he struggled, but his injuries are hampering his value to this team. The Mets have to start exploring any type of options with Bay to get him back to his old form.
Bobby Parnell came in to pitch the eighth inning and he didn’t deliver for the Mets. He would pitch an inning allowing a run on two hits. He gave up a perfect suicide squeeze to Gerald Laird giving the Cardinals a 5-4 lead.
The game went into extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th inning the Mets got a walk-off homerun from Angel Pagan.
Game Notes:
- Josh Thole went 2 of 4 with an RBI double and an RBI single to tie the game in the eighth inning.
- Justin Turner went 1 for 5 with a single in the ninth inning.
- Jose Reyes went 0 for 5 with a run scored. He struggled for the first time in a while as he popped out four times tonight which isn’t a good sign when he goes into a slump.
