The New York Mets travelled to Miami to take on the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium tonight. The Mets were coming off a lost after winning the first two games against the Cardinals. The Mets welcomed back David Wright after he missed 58 games with a back injury. The Mets were looking for Wright to give the team a nice spark to get them through their second half of the season.
Wright didn’t disappoint in his first plate appearance as he doubled in Justin Turner from second base. He showed that he could opposite field and pick up a extra base hit. He gave the Mets an early lead and his teammates followed his lead. After him Daniel Murphy singled in Carlos Beltran and Angel Pagan would hit a sacrifice-fly to score Wright. The Mets opened up an early three run lead and handed it off to Mike Pelfrey to hold.
Pelfrey would go six innings allowing four runs on five hits. He really struggled with his command as he walked four batters. He struggled with not allowing homeruns as he gave up two of those. Pelfrey now has given up 18 homeruns this season after having 18 all of last season. The Mets really have to find out what is really wrong with Pelfrey because he is slowly dragging them down. He hasn’t done anything this season to really help this team his struggles are really starting to bit the Mets.
Chris Volstad started for the Marlins looking to get himself on track. Volstad struggled as well and really gave the Marlins little hope of winning this game. He made it harder for them to get the lead because every time the Marlins tied the game he would give the Mets more runs. Volstad only lasted five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Despite going the five innings Volstad threw 106 pitches and only threw 61 strikes which shows that he was behind in the count the entire game. He is just like Pelfrey in that they are both good pitchers, but they are very inconsistent.
Tonight the starting pitchers didn’t bring their best pitches and it showed as both didn’t get a decision in the outcome. The Mets offense scored every time they needed too.
Pedro Beato gave up the tying run in the 7th inning as Logan Morrison hit a sacrifice fly. He really struggled to complete an inning as he walked two batters and gave up a hit. He only lasted 0.1 of an inning and left with the bases loaded with one out. Beato struggled tonight and it seemed as if he had trouble with the rain.
The Mets would score two more runs in the 8th inning to extend their lead to 7-5. They would get an RBI double from David Wright and a RBI double for Daniel Murphy. This gave Mets the lead for the fourth time of the game.
Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth inning looking to get his second save of the season. Izzy would accomplish that as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Game Notes:
- Angel Pagan went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and a single.
- Lucas Duda went 2 for 3 with two singles before Scott Hairston came in to pinch hit.
- David Wright went 2 for 6 with two RBI doubles in his return to the lineup. He played a nice game in his return and really helped this team offensively.
- Jose Reyes went 2 for 5 with a double, single, and a run scored.
- Justin Turner went 1 for 4 with two runs scored.
