The New York Mets traveled back to New York to face their cross town rivals the Yankees in a three game series. The Mets were coming off a successful road trip winning both series against the Rangers and Tigers. The Mets offense was held in check after their four game 52 run performance. The Mets have played better, but they still struggle at home. The Yankees have been really hot since Derek Jeter went down with his injury.
Jon Niese started for the Mets as he looked to keep up his great starts. He would allow three early runs in the first inning, putting his team at risk for the lost. He allowed the Yankees to capture the momentum early which hampered the Mets ability to comeback. Niese went six innings allowing three runs on nine hits. He pitched great when he had to get outs as he struck out seven batters. Niese still gave the Mets a quality start, but his team wasn’t able to get him any runs.
Ivan Nova pitched a great game as he went five innings allowing one run on seven hits. He was taken out after the Yankees loaded the bases and Jorge Posada came in to pinch hit. He was going great before he was taken out, but the Yankees were looking to get runs to put the game away. Posada struck out looking and the Yankees weren’t able to get any runs out of their bases loaded scenario. Nova was able to get his team through the first five innings.
The Mets manager Terry Collins was ejected after Jose Reyes was tagged out going to third. The replay showed that Alex Rodriguez missed the tag, but the umpire was blocked and couldn’t make the proper call. Collins came out to argue, but was ejected. The Mets would of have had a runner at third with one out trialing by two runs. This play proved costly to the Mets and they never were able to get the Yankees in a jam again.
The Yankees got a run on a Eduardo Nunez RBI single in the 8th inning. This was an unearned run because Daniel Murphy missed the ball as he tried to catch the throw from Reyes. And in the 9th inning Alex Rodriguez doubled deep to center field which scored Curtis Granderson.
Tonight the Mets set a record of 42,020 fans which is the largest in Citi Field history. The Mets announced that they will have standing room tickets on sale tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with the cost being $45.00.
Game Notes:
- Jose Reyes continued his hot streak as he went 2 of 4 with two singles. He continues to play at a high level and is deserving of much credit for the Mets hot run. Reyes had his 43rd multi-hit game of the season.
- The Mets only run came on a Ruben Tejada RBI single in the second inning.
