The New York Mets played the Milwaukee Brewers today at Citi Field. The Mets were trying to get a win and avoid a series lost. They were also trying to score some runs for their pitching staff who hasn’t pitched that bad. The Mets last night only scored one run as they continue to struggle. They were looking to get more than one run tonight as they went up against a tough Brewers pitching staff.
The Mets were able to get a RBI single from Jason Bay to cut the Brewer lead to a run. The Mets were held off the board until Ruben Tejada hit a double to left field plating a run. That would be followed by a Willie Harris sacrifice-fly as the Mets cut the lead to 7-3. Later in the inning David Wright grounded into a fielders choice that plated another run. The Mets would bring themselves within three runs of tying the game. The Mets would send pinch hitter Lucas Duda to the plate with two runners on with two outs and he delivered a two-run double to cut the Brewer lead to one run. The Mets would end the inning as they scored five runs on six hits. The Mets offense woke up in the seventh inning and they looked like the Mets from earlier this season as they were able to get hit after hit.
Chris Capuano started for the Mets and was looking to give the Mets a great outing. Capuano made three key mistakes in his outing that resulted in seven runs (five earned) on five hits. Capuano struggled as he gave up a combined three homeruns to Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, and Yuniesky Betancourt. He really struggled to keep the ball in the ball park and made it harder for the Mets to comeback.
Randy Wolf pitched for the Brewers looking to get a win. Wolf would go 6.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. He really had his pitching going early in the game, but he would have a melt down in the seventh that charged him with four runs in the seventh. He really struggled in that seventh inning allowing the Mets to score easily. Wolf also allowed the opposition to score more than two runs for the first time in nine straight Brewer games. The Mets did a excellent job in getting their selves back in the game.
The Mets would face former Met closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 8th inning hoping to get a run or more off him. The Mets would tie the game on a Josh Thole RBI double. The Mets gave K-Rod a rude welcoming back to New York as they were able to get a run off their former pitcher. The Mets would then score two runs on a two-run homerun from Angel Pagan. This is what the Mets season was all about tonight, that they weren’t going to quit after falling behind by six runs. But…
Jason Isringhausen would pitch the ninth inning and never recorded a out as he loaded the bases and walked in a run. Izzy left with the bases loaded and no one out. Manny Acosta came in to pitch and recorded the first out to Ryan Braun. He was left in to face the biggest Brewer of them all in Prince Fielder. He would give up a RBI single to Prince Fielder to tie the game. So the Mets bullpen continued to struggle as Jason Isringhausen allowed four runs. Izzy also threw 20 pitches and was only able throw seven strikes.
The Mets pitching walked seven combined batters and six of those batters scored. Basically the Mets shot themselves in their own foot today. The Mets would go on to lose the game 11-9 after taking the lead in the 8th inning. Francisco Rodriguez would pick up the win after his team was able to rally.
Game Notes:
- Angel Pagan went 3 for 5 with a two-run homerun and a stolen base. He had a very big day for the Mets and was the reason behind their comeback.
- Ruben Tejada went 2 for 3 with a RBI double and a single.
- Josh Thole was able to tie the game in his pitch hit role as he plated a run on a RBI double.
