The New York Mets played the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Chase Field. The Mets were trying to snap a two game losing streak and bring their record to .500. The Mets haven’t been pitching well or playing great defense during their losing streak. They had to play great defense and pitch well tonight, if they were going to win.
The Mets were able to cut the four run deficit to three runs on a Jason Bay RBI single in the 5th inning. They were able to score a run in the 8th on a Jason Pridie RBI groundout. In the 9th inning the Mets were able to get a run on a Willie Harris sacrifice fly. The Mets struggled for runs tonight and their offense was overmatched against the great pitching from the Diamondbacks. The offense couldn’t muster up any fight against the Diamondbacks pitching staff. Each inning the Mets would get a man on, but couldn’t score from that point. This team has to get their offense going again in order to be competitive this season.
Dillon Gee started tonight looking to give the Mets his best effort. Gee really struggled tonight as he again couldn’t command his pitches. The Mets have to be concerned with Gee and his lack of command. Gee only lasted five innings allowing four runs on five hits. He really struggled to get outs and couldn’t give the Mets any chance to win the game. He has hit a rough spot in his season and hasn’t been able to figure out his problems and fix them. Once he figures out his problems he will get wins for this team.
Ian Kennedy started for the D-Backs trying to notch his 15th win of the season. He went 7.0 innings allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts. He wasn’t perfect tonight, but he was able to get out of multiple jams. He is really pitching at a high level right now and is giving the D-Backs plenty of great pitching. He is now just the second pitcher to reach 15 wins in the National League.
The Mets season is slowly fading away and their chances of making the playoffs are really slim. Now they have to just keep playing to finish out the season. The Mets were unable to rally and lost the game tonight 4-3.
Game Notes:
- Angel Pagan went 2 for 5 with a run scored. This was his first game back after missing two games with back spasms.
- Jason Bay went 3 for 4 with a double and a RBI single.
