The New York Mets took on the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon looking to get their first win of the series. The Mets came into the day on a five game losing streak. The Mets were trying to bring some momentum with them into their series against the Braves starting Friday.
The Mets had their offense going today as they were scoring runs with ease. The Mets started the scoring in the first inning as Lucas Duda grounded into a fielders choice and plated the first Met run of the day. Nick Evans would come up later in the inning with two men on trying to make the lead bigger. Evans would hit a three-run homerun to give the Mets a 4-0 advantage. The Mets would add more runs after the Phillies cut the Met lead to 4-3. David Wright would hit a solo homerun in the 3rd inning. In the next inning Wright would hit a sacrifice-fly that plated Angel Pagan giving the Mets a 6-3 lead. And in the fifth inning Nick Evans would hit a RBI double that plated Jason Bay. Nick Evans really came up big for the Mets as he finally had a nice outbreak game.
The Mets sent Mike Pelfrey to the mound hoping he could stop the Phillies from sweeping them. Pelfrey pitched badly in this game, but somehow was able to escape with the win. Pelfrey went six innings allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks. He threw 125 pitches during his five innings and really struggled to get outs. One thing that can not go unnoticed is that Pelfrey fought his way through his outing today. He really put the team on his back and pitched very well. Pelfrey was great today in that he never quit and fought his way through his outing.
Kyle Kendrick started for the Phillies today looking to get his team the sweep. He went four innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. He struggled with his pitching today as he allowed the Mets to get hit after hit. He also gave up two homeruns and threw 81 pitches. This was the best the Mets looked in this series and they were able to beat a Philly starter.
Bobby Parnell pitched the 9th inning in his new role as the Mets closer. He would pitch a very impressive inning against the heart of the Phillies lineup. This was the second save of Parnell’s career the last came on August 5th, 2009 against the St. Louis Cardinals in three innings. Parnell walked two batters and struck out two.
Game Notes:
- Nick Evans went 3 for 4 with a homerun, double, and four RBI’s. He really played a great game and made a nice defensive play as well.
- Ronny Paulino drew a walk in his pinch-hit appearance despite his injured toe.
- David Wright went 3 for 4 with a homerun with two RBI’s.
