Mets win on a walk-off single by Lucas Duda; Win 9-8

The New York Mets started a four game series tonight against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field. The Mets were coming off a 2-1 series lost to the Atlanta Braves. The Mets were without Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy who were both placed on the disabled list today. Both players were injured in separate situations yesterday. So the Mets had to take on the Padres without their speedy shortstop and their utility player.

The Mets fell behind early, but in the bottom of the first Angel Pagan tied the game with a solo homerun to right field. This was Pagan’s 5th homerun of the season. In the following inning Jason Bay followed Pagan’s lead and hit his 9th homerun of the season. This broke the tie as Bay hit a solo homer. And in the third inning David Wright hit a two-run homerun to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. Then after falling behind 8-4 the Mets were able to get across two runs to cut the Padre lead to two runs. Mike Baxter, whom the Mets called up earlier today, had an RBI double in his Mets debut. David Wright had a RBI single to bring the Mets within a run of tying the game at eight. The Mets were able to get a walk-off single from Lucas Duda.

Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets trying to give them another great start. Pelfrey gave up a early run, but was able to settle in to a groove. He would have a tough sixth inning as he allowed the Padres to tie the game on three runs. He really had a tough inning to close out his outing. Pelfrey went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on nine hits. He really struggled late in the game which put him in line for a no decision. The Mets were getting a great start out of Pelfrey before he allowed the Padres to get back into the game. He needs to continue to prove that he can be a consistent pitcher if he wants to stay with the team.

Tim Stauffer started for the Padres looking to get his eighth win of the season. He gave up three homeruns resulting in four runs. He went seven innings allowing four runs on six hits. He really started slowly, but was able to give his team the chance to comeback. He was great later in the game and proved that he could pitch without having the lead. He was able to persevere past the terrible start and finished his outing with great pose and control.

Pedro Beato gave up the tying run in the 8th inning to give the Padres a 5-4 lead. He really struggled to get outs in the 8th inning as he walked a batter and hit a batter to put two men on with no outs. Ryota Igarashi came in and gave up the hit which scored a run. Igarashi would struggle as he would load the bases and give up a three-run double to Jason Bartlett. The Padres were able to score four runs in the 8th to take a 8-4 lead.

Jason Isringhausen would earn the win after the Mets were able to rally.

David Wright
