The Mets fell behind early as the Padres jumped out to a early 2-0 lead. The Mets cut the Padre lead to one run on a Ruben Tejada RBI double. That would be the only run the Mets were able to score tonight. The offense is in a real slump after they scored plenty of runs earlier in the season. The struggling offense makes it very difficult on the pitching, The team needs to find their offense and build off it.
Jon Niese started for the Mets wanting to give the Mets a nice start. He would go six innings allowing three runs on ten hits. Niese didn’t have his best stuff, but he kept the Mets within striking distance. He really pitched well despite giving up the early runs. The Mets offense never gave Niese the lead in this game and Niese was never able to settle in. If Niese can limit the number of hits he allows, he will be a great pitcher.
Cory Luebke started for the Padres looking to get a win for his team. Luebke went six innings allowing a run on three hits. He really dominated the Mets tonight as he pitched very well for the Padres. He walked three batters, but he was able to get out of multiple jams. This is the second time that Luebke has beaten the Mets this season and that last win came last week. The Padres have to look at keeping him in the rotation for next season.
The Mets bullpen struggled yet again as they combined for three earned runs. Pedro Beato struggled as he allowed two runs on three hits in his inning of work. He is struggling to keep the ball down and hitters are just hitting easily off him. If he can get the ball down in the zone he will be unstoppable. Lastly, Mike Pelfrey came in to get in some work as he went 0.1 innings allowing two hits on one run earned. The Mets wanted to see where his arm was after he left his last start after getting hit on his elbow. The Mets would go on to lose the game 6-1.
