The New York Mets played the San Diego Padres tonight at Citi Field. The Mets won the first two games of the series and were looking to get their third win tonight. The Mets won the first two games on back to back comeback victories. They have shown that they will fight until the finish and are making it a habit lately. This game was one the Mets would want to get in order to sure up that they would win the series.
The Mets fell behind 5-0 and scored their first run in the fourth inning on a R.A. Dickey RBI single. They would score two runs in the sixth inning to cut the Padre lead to 5-3. The Mets were on their way to another comeback effort. The Mets would give up another run, but would get one back on a Willie Harris RBI single. The Mets would load the bases in the 9th inning with two outs and Ruben Tejada up at the plate. He would reach base on a error on the Padres second baseman. The Mets would cut the Padres lead to 9-5 with Willie Harris as the tying run at the plate. Harris would line out to end the game.
R.A. Dickey pitched for the Mets trying to snap a personal two game losing streak. Dickey really struggled tonight as he allowed five runs (three runs earned) to score. He went six innings allowing six hits and one walk. The Mets need Dickey to show that he can be a pitcher they can use next season, otherwise the Mets could possibly go in another direction. He has struggled badly this season with his knuckleball as it continues to be flat and lack the late movement. He needs to find the proper break on the knuckleball and work from there.
Aaron Harang started for the Padres looking to give his team a nice effort. He gave the Padres 5.2 innings allowing three runs on ten hits. He really struggled to keep the Mets off base as he allowed double digit hits. He was able to get outs when he needed it most and really was lucky the Mets were unable to convert. He has struggled in the second half of the season and hasn’t pitched overly great. He has to bring down the hits he gives up, otherwise he will be looking at a higher ERA.
The Mets bullpen gave up four combined runs tonight. The Mets had a chance to comeback on multiple occasions, but the Mets pitching couldn’t keep the Padres off the board. Bobby Parnell pitched the ninth inning and gave up three runs in his inning of work. He really struggled to get outs tonight and gave the Mets nothing tonight.
Game Notes:
- Josh Thole went 4 for 5 with a double and two singles.
- Ruben Tejada went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a single.
- Angel Pagan left the game after two plate appearances with back spasms.
- Jason Bay’s hitting streak would end at eleven games as he went 0-4 with a walk.
