Pre-Game: Padres vs. Mets 7:10 PM

The New York Mets will host the San Diego Padres tonight at Citi Field. This will start a four game series against a cold offensive team. The Mets need a series sweep of the Padres in order to make up for their series lost to the Braves. The Mets are now nine games back in the Wild Card race and are falling out of the race. They will be without Daniel Murphy for the rest of the season after he tore his MCL yesterday. Murphy will not require surgery, but will have to rehab for four months. This is another huge blow to the Mets season and losing Jose Reyes yesterday also destroys any possibility of the Mets making the playoffs.

Mike Pelfrey will start for the Mets trying to continue his great pitching. Over his last two start Pelfrey is 1-0 allowing just four runs to score. He is starting to pitch the ball much better since his complete game effort two starts ago. He will try to give the Mets a nice start tonight and continue his great Citi Field pitching. If the Mets can get a good effort out of him tonight they will find themselves on the winning side. The Mets need to score a bunch of runs to get some season long frustrations out. This team needs some pitching today against the worst offensive club in the league.

Tim Stauffer will pitch for the Padres looking to get his eighth win of the season. He has pitched well this season despite his 7-8 record. He has a ERA of 2.96 and is really pitching well. His team lacks any power and can not bring in runs on a consistent basis. He will need to hold down the Mets today if he is going to win. He doesn’t strikeout many batters, but he will keep the ball in play to get outs.
