The New York Mets played their final game of the season today against the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets were hoping that Jose Reyes could get a hit and he would in the first inning. Reyes laid down a beautiful bunt to get a hit. He would be immediately taken out of the game and his average improved to .337. The fans booed in disappointment and were very vocal on social networking sites. That was a lose/lose situation because there was absolutely no indication that he would get three hits today. Also there was no indication that he would go 1 for 4 either. So the fans have to understand that it was probably Reyes’ decision to come out of the game, which was decided before the game.
The Reds started Edinson Volquez who was looking to get his record to .500 with a win. Volquez went seven innings allowing three runs on six hits. He pitched well, but wasn’t able to get any run support to get him off the hook. The Mets did a excellent job in getting hits when they had to. They were able to get a few runs off Volquez that was enough to win the game.
Miguel Batista started for the Mets looking to collect his second win for the Mets. Batista pitched very well in his season ending start. He went nine innings allowing just two hits without allowing any runs. This was Batista’s first complete game shutout since 2006. Batista pitched very well tonight and put the team on his back in his last start of the season. He could be an option for the Mets for next season if he wants to continue pitching games. His start tonight was very impressive because he was able to go nine innings and win the game for his team.
The Mets offense was quiet for the most part today. Nick Evans drove in the first run of the game in the 4th inning. Then in the sixth inning Mike Baxter hit his first Major League homerun a two-run homer to extend the Met lead to 3-0. The Mets wouldn’t score another run for the rest of the game and would win 3-0.
