The New York Mets played the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Busch Stadium. The Mets were coming off a 2-1 series win against their division rival Atlanta Braves. They have started to get their offense going and is a reason behind their success. Jason Bay was held out of the lineup with the flu and was replaced by Willie Harris in the lineup. The Mets also announced that Wally Bachman will be with them for the rest of the season.
The Mets sent Mike Pelfrey to the mound trying to get a win for the Mets. Pelfrey went six innings allowing five runs on ten hits. He walked away tonight with a no decision after the bullpen failed to hold the lead for the Mets. Pelfrey struggled to keep the Cardinals down, but was able to keep the game tied when he left the game. This season has been a struggle for Pelfrey and the no decisions just continue to pile up. The Mets have to hope for a better effort in his next start in what will be his final start of the season.
Edwin Jackson pitched for the Cardinals looking to continue his good pitching. Jackson went five innings allowing five runs on nine hits. He struggled with his command as he walked four batters and threw 94 pitches. He really struggled tonight, but was able to walk away with a no decision after his team was able to rally.
The Mets were able jumped out to a early lead on a Lucas Duda RBI double in the first inning. The Mets led by a run up until the third inning when they scored three runs to lead by four runs. Then after the Cardinals came within a run Mike Pelfrey doubled in a run to extend the Met lead by two runs. Then after the Cardinals tied the game the Mets were able to get a run home on a bases loaded walk to force in a run.
The Mets bullpen struggled in the 7th inning as they gave up the lead. The Mets bullpen gave up a combined six runs in that inning as the Mets used three pitchers to get through the inning. The Mets fell behind 11-6 and would go on to lose the game.
