The New York Mets faced the Chicago Cubs today at Citi Field. The Mets were coming off a game one win in which they won on a walk-off double by Justin Turner. The Mets were able to score even after they trailed 3-0. And they were able to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with a final score of 5-4. The Mets were trying for two wins in a row with a win this afternoon.
Chris Capuano started for the Mets looking to earn a win after a terrible start. Today Capuano went seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts. Capuano pitched very well today and only threw 95 pitches during his outing. He really deserved a win with the type of performance he had today. His offense was unable to get him runs to put him in position to win the game. But Capuano did keep the Mets in the ballgame which paid off in the end.
The Cubs started Randy Wells hoping that he could continue his great pitching. Wells went seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He pitched very well, but in the eighth inning he struggled to get outs. Wells had the Mets shut out before the eighth inning, but struggled with the first two batters and his day was over. The Mets were happy to get two runs off him and keep the Cub lead at a minimum.
Mets reliever gave up back to back doubles in the 8th inning to extend the Cubs lead to 3-0. The Mets had to bring in Daniel Ray Herrera to get the final out of the inning.
In the eighth inning the Mets would start their rally as Jose Reyes doubled in Willie Harris to bring the Mets within two runs of tying the game at three. Later in the inning David Wright singled in Jose Reyes to bring the Mets within a run. Wright notched his 51st RBI with his RBI single in the 8th inning. The Mets would take the lead on a Jason Bay two run single and the Mets would have themselves a 4-3 lead. This was the second consecutive game that the Mets trailed by three runs and came back.
Bobby Parnell would come in to pitch the ninth inning. After the second error by David Wright, Parnell gave up a double to Bryan LaHair to put runners on second and third. Parnell would get a groundout from Starlin Castro to hold the runners on second and third. The next batter for the Cubs was Reed Johnson who would strikeout to keep the runners on the same base. But the next batter was Aramis Ramirez and he would bring home two runs on a two run double. This marked the fifth blown save of the season and his second consecutive. The Mets would trail going into the bottom of the ninth 5-4 and were in danger of losing the game.
In the bottom of the ninth inning the Mets had to face Carlos Marmol. The Mets were unable to get anything going and went on to lose the game. The Mets lost the game with a final score of 5-4.
