Mets avoid sweep by Cardinals; Win 8-6

The New York Mets finished up their final road tip today against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets were trying to avoid a series sweep by the Cardinals today. The Mets offense was cold this afternoon and they struggled to score some runs. This team is now just playing out the rest of their season trying to get the best looking record as possible.

The Mets started Chris Capuano today in hopes that he could get them a win. Capuano lasted just 4.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. He struggled early and often in this game and he allowed two homeruns resulting in three runs. The Mets had the opportunity to trade Capuano to the Red Sox, but they wanted to keep Capuano at least for another year. The Mets have received great pitching from Capuano this season and this game doesn’t have any impact on his season.

The Cardinals started Jake Westbrook as he looked to collect a win for his team. Westbrook went six innings allowing one run on three hits. He did walk four batters and now has nine walks in his last two starts. His control was great early on in the game, but he struggled as the game went on. The Cardinals have to be excited about what Westbrook is bringing to the team now going into the playoffs. The only thing that they should be concerned about is his lack of control as the game goes on.

The Mets were fortunate to get a bases loaded walk to plate a run in the fifth inning. The Mets would get within a run before the Cardinals tacked on two runs in the next half inning. The Mets would later surrender two more runs in the seventh inning to give the Cardinals a 6-1. The Mets would later score a run on a passed ball that plated Ruben Tejada. In the ninth inning Jason Motte came in trying to end the game, but would load the bases and force in a run on a bases loaded walk. The Mets would eventually get a bases loaded broken bat single by Jose Reyes to plate just one run with one out. The Mets would eventually get a two run double from Ruben Tejada to tie the game at six. The Mets battled back from five runs down to tie the game. The Mets would later take the lead on a Willie Harris two run double and the Mets would have a 8-6 lead.

The Mets would go on to win as Bobby Parnell picked up his sixth save of the season. The Mets had their biggest inning of the season in the ninth inning as they were able to get six runs in that inning. The Mets would win the game 8-6 and avoid a sweep by the Cardinals.
