The New York Mets took on the Chicago Cubs tonight at Citi Field. The Mets were trying to snap a two game losing streak after they were swept by the Atlanta Braves yesterday. The Mets played terrible defense in both games yesterday and struggled to hit with runners in scoring position. Tonight they were trying to beat a lesser team and earn their 71st win of the season.
The Mets fell down 3-0 early, but would recover as the game went on. The Mets first scored on a fielder’s choice by David Wright that scored Justin Turner in the fourth inning. Later in the inning Jason Bay doubled to score a run. At this point in the game Bay had two doubles in two plate appearances. Nick Evans would groundout to third and bring home the tying run. The Mets were able to climb back into the game with the Evans RBI groundout. In the next inning Justin Turner would double home Jose Reyes to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.
Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets trying to get the team a win. Pelfrey would leave the game in the 7th inning after hitting a batter. Pelfrey went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits. Pelfrey pitched strong and was able to get some run support to put him in position for the win. Pelfrey gave up a two-run homerun to Carlos Pena in the third inning that put him in a early 2 run deficit. Pelfrey did leave the game with two runners on base and Josh Stinson would try to get the final out of the inning. Stinson would get the final out to preserve the Mets lead.
Casey Coleman started for the Cubs looking to get his third win of the season. After getting a 3-0 lead Coleman gave the lead right back after allowing four runs in two innings. Coleman would go five innings allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. He really struggled in the later innings of his outing and could stop the Mets from scoring off him. Coleman continues to have a underachieving season as his record is now 2-8.
The Mets sent Manny Acosta to the mound to pitch the ninth inning biding for his second save of the season. Acosta would allow a run to score to the game as he blew his first save as the closer.
The Mets would get the first man on in the ninth inning on a Nick Evans single to center field. The Mets would win the game later in the inning on a Justin Turner RBI double. The Mets would win with a final score of 5-4.
