Mets beat Nationals 6-3

The Mets played the Nationals in the final game of a three game series. Both the Mets and Nationals won a game and the winner of this game would win the series. The Mets rested Nick Evans tonight who had hit a homerun in the previous two games. The Mets would start Josh Statin in his place as he made his Major League debut.

Today the Mets started the scoring as they were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead on a Ruben Tejada two-run single. After falling behind 3-2 the Mets tied the game on a Lucas Duda solo homerun. Later in the inning pinch hitter Willie Harris broke the tie with a two run single. Then the Mets would run a suicide squeeze to bring home another run. The Mets now had a 6-3 lead and were in control again. The Mets had hits from every starter today including Pelfrey.

Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets looking to give the Mets a nice start. He would struggle with his control and struggle to get outs. Pelfrey went five innings allowing three runs on five hits. The numbers just got worst as Pelfrey walked five batters and threw 106 pitches. He really struggled today, but he did somehow keep the Mets within reach of winning this game. His struggles overlapped any success he has had this season. Pelfrey needs to find some type of consistency if he wants to remain in the league. The talent is there, but Pelfrey doesn’t know how to use it. Pelfrey would get a no decision in this game.

Livan Hernandez started for the Nationals looking to have a successful season finale. Hernandez struggled in the sixth inning and thus ended his day early. Hernandez would leave with the bases loaded and received a standing ovation. He would last 5.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits. Overall the season for Hernandez was a nice one, but this last game must hurt for the veteran.

The Mets would go on to win this game 6-3. Also, Josh Satin got his first Major League hit in his first at-bat. Satin would go 1 for 2 with a run scored.

The Mets bullpen combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Bobby Parnell also picked up his fifth save of the season a day after his blown save.
