The Mets played game one against the Atlanta Braves this afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets were coming off a series win against the Florida Marlins. They were trying to make it three wins in a row with a win in game one.
The Mets offense would comeback after the Braves jumped out to a early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Jason Bay decided that he wanted to have the lead and with the bases loaded Bay hit his second grand slam of the season. The Mets would lead 4-3 after Bay’s grand slam.
Chris Schwinden started for the Mets trying to have a successful Major League debut. Schwinden would have a unsuccessful debut as he went five innings allowing five runs on eight hits. He struggled early on in his outing. The Mets were able to get him the lead, but he gave the runs right back and he left the game down a run. He put pressure on the offense tonight to deliver more runs, but they never did while he was in the game.
Mike Minor started for the Braves looking to get his team a win. Minor would go five innings allowing four runs on seven hits. He struggled as well, but was able to get offense from his team. Minor pitched better later in the game, but his slow start hampered any progress of going past five in this game.
The Braves would tact on another run as Tim Byrdak walked in a run after he came in with the bases loaded. The Braves would take a two run advantage going into the bottom of the 8th inning. The Mets would get a run across on a Nick Evans sacrifice-fly. But still trail 6-5 and would have to face Braves rookie closer Craig Kimbrel. In the ninth inning the Mets would get the first man on as Jose Reyes singled in his pinch-hit appearance. The Mets would leave Reyes at first base and they would lose the game 6-5.
