Mets outlast the Phillies; Win 2-1

The New York Mets took on Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. The Mets were looking to make it two wins in a row with a win in game one. The Mets starting outfield would miss another game today. Jason Bay did start, but after three innings had to leave because of being sick. The Mets wanted to get a win against a team that is struggling offensively.

Cole Hamels started for the Phillies looking to get his team a win. Hamels went seven innings allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. He really pitched well, but wasn’t able to keep the Mets off the board to earn a win. The Phillies have to be happy with the effort Hamels gave this afternoon even though he didn’t get the win.

The Mets started R.A. Dickey hoping to get a win. Dickey was locked in and was able to no-hit the Phillies through 6.1 innings before Shane Victorino double for the first hit. Dickey would allow three straight hits one of which surrendered a run. He was able to get a double play to get him out of the inning. Dickey went seven innings allowing one run on three hits. He really gave the Mets a great start tonight and deserved a win, but wouldn’t get it. Dickey pitched very well in his final start of the season and kept the Mets in position to get the win.

Valentino Pascucci would deliver the tying run for the Mets as he tied the game with a pinch-hit solo homerun. This was Pascucci’s first homerun since 10/2/2004 against the Mets Al Leiter. He was able to get Dickey off the hook after Dickey allowed a run in the seventh inning. The Mets would get another run in the 8th inning on a David Wright RBI double. The Mets would take their first lead of the game. A key to that RBI double was Ruben Tejada’s stolen base that put him at second to score the run more easily.

The Mets would hand the ball to Manny Acosta in the ninth inning hoping that he could end the game. Acosta would pitch the ninth inning in which he held the Phillies off and got the Mets the win. The Mets would win 2-1 and Acosta would get his third save of the season.
