The New York Mets will play their final road game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets have lost the first two games and are struggling with their bullpen. Last night the Mets had a one run advantage going into the seventh inning, but the bullpen blew the lead and the game. The team has struggled to hold on the the late inning leads, which is causing some concern around the Mets fan base. This team now has ensured that they will have another losing season.
This afternoon the Mets will send Chris Capuano to the mound as he looks to collect his 12th win of the season. In his last start Capuano went five innings allowing two runs on six hits in a win against the Atlanta Braves. He really pitched well enough to get the win for the team. He had six strikeouts and walked two batters. He has to bring that same effort today if the Mets are going to win.
Jake Westbrook will start for the Cardinals looking to get his 13th win of the season. He is pitching well despite his losses this season. In most of his starts this season Westbrook has not been given the run support and has losses due to that factor. In his last start Westbrook allowed one run over 3.1 innings against the Phillies. He struggled with his command and walked five batters. The Mets have to be patient with Westbrook and look to just get hits off him.
The Mets didn’t have Jason Bay in the lineup for the third consecutive game due to the flu. Bay’s replacement has been Willie Harris. Harris has been playing really well since he received the starting job while Bay’s out. Harris had a phenomenal defensive play last night and saved the Mets from giving up three runs. He also homered in last nights game to close out a nice performance.
