The New York Mets will play the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Busch Stadium. The Mets are coming off a 2-1 series win against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets played very well in that series and were able to score runs against a tough pitching staff. The Mets are looking at a tough opponent in the Cardinals. In order to beat this team the Mets have to pitch well and play great defense. The Cardinals can really hit the ball well and are playing really well heading into the final weeks of the season.
Tonight the Mets will send Mike Pelfrey to the mound as he tries to give the Mets a nice start tonight. The Mets need Pelfrey to get them through this game tonight and get them a win. Pelfrey is coming off a unlucky performance where David Wright committed an error that resulted in two runs. Pelfrey would never get any run support and would go on to lose the game after he went seven innings allowing six hits with zero earned runs. He has pitched much better as the season has gone on. His problem is that he allows too many big innings which result in losses and no decisions. The Mets have to get a nice effort from him tonight if they want to win this game.
Edwin Jackson will oppose Pelfrey as he pitches for the Cardinals. Jackson is coming off a nice performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates where he went 6.2 innings allowing two runs on eight hits. He really pitched well enough to get the win. His pitching has been really good since he came over from the White Sox at the trade deadline. He is a very good pitcher who can through plenty of innings. The Cardinals needed a starter and Jackson has filled in nicely. His team is looking for him to get them a win and push them closer to the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card race.
Jason Bay is sick, but is with the team. Willie Harris is starting in left field for Bay.
