The Mets played the Cincinnati Reds tonight at Citi Field. This started the final series for the Mets this season. They were looking to get a win against a team that was also out of the playoff race. The Mets were coming off a very great series in which they were able to go 2-1 against the Phillies.
Tonight the Reds started Homer Bailey looking to get a nice start from him. Bailey lasted only five innings allowing four runs on nine hits. He really struggled to limit the amount of base runners. He did strikeout seven batters, but he would leave the game down a run. The Reds were not expecting this type of start from Bailey, but he did keep them in the game.
The Mets sent Chris Schwinden to the mound as he sought after his first Major League win. Schwinden went five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. He really pitched well for the Mets tonight, but wasn’t able to go longer due to his 87 pitch count. This was the second consecutive nice start for Schwinden and he really had a nice start overall. He left the game with the lead and was in position to get the win.
After the Reds scored two runs, the Mets came right back and took the lead. The Mets scored their first run on a RBI single from David Wright in the third inning. Later in the same inning Nick Evans gave the Mets the lead on a two-run double to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. The Mets would later score another run after the Reds scored a run of their own. The run came on a Jose Reyes sacrifice-fly that scored Jason Pridie.
The Mets lead would be erased as Josh Stinson served up a three-run homerun to Chris Heisey. The Mets would fell behind 6-4 and had another deficit to over come. In the eighth inning Jose Reyes knocked in a run with a RBI double. Reyes would be tagged out after he over ran second base which would be a major part in the Mets not tying the game in that inning.
In the ninth inning Willie Harris led off the inning with a double. David Wright would be hit by a pitch on his back to put runners on second and first. Nick Evans came up and bunted the ball back to the mound and the Reds were able to get a force out on third base. Josh Thole would hit into a double play to end the game. The Mets lost 6-5.
- Nick Evans went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI’s.
- Jose Reyes went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI’s. Reyes also had a stolen base his 38th of the season.
- Ruben Tejada went 3 for 5 with three singles.
