Reds beat the Mets in the 13th inning 5-4

The New York Mets played their final night game tonight against the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets were looking to snap a two game losing streak. Before the game the Mets announced that manager Terry Collins would have his contract option picked up for the 2013 season. This move was the best option for the Mets to make regarding the managerial position. Collins now will have the team until 2013 when his contract expires.

Tonight the Cincinnati Reds started Bronson Arroyo who was coming off a complete game. Arroyo would go eight innings allowing four runs on nine hits. He gave up two homeruns which really put his team in a bind. Arroyo pitched well considering the four runs. The Reds have to be happy with the way Arroyo closed out his season with back to back nice starts. He gave his team his best effort, but he would get the lost after his team failed to comeback.

The Mets started Chris Capuano who would pitch in his final game of the season. Capuano went six innings allowing three runs on five hits. Capuano made two mistakes which resulted in three runs. He did strike out nine batters, but he allowed two homeruns resulting in three runs. He pitched well enough to leave with the lead, putting him in position to win the game.

The Mets were down early by two runs, but in the first inning David Wright drove in a run with a RBI single. The Mets were on the board and trailed the Reds by a run. In the third inning Jose Reyes hit his sixth homerun of the season to right field. He would tie the game with his homerun and the Mets were in position to take the lead. Later in the game in the fifth inning Jose Reyes hit his second homerun of the game to give the Mets the lead. The Mets now had a 3-2 lead and were in position to win the game. After a homerun by Joey Votto the Mets would take the lead again on a Josh Thole RBI single. That would be the last run the Mets scored and they went into the ninth inning trying to close it out.

Manny Acosta pitched the ninth inning after he pitched the eighth inning. Acosta would get two outs and was replaced after two men reached base and the left handed batter came up. Acosta continues to show the Mets that he can help this team next season out of the bullpen. Bobby Parnell replaced Acosta looking to get a one out save. Parnell would give up a opposite field double to allow the Reds to tie the game.

The Mets would get a Jose Reyes hit in the ninth inning. Reyes now has a .336 batting average for the season to lead the National League. Ruben Tejada would walk to put two men on base. The Mets would strand two batters to go into extra innings.

In the 13th inning the Reds would take the lead on a suicide squeeze to give them the lead. The Mets would have to score in order to prolong the game. The Mets were able to get the first runner on a walk. The Mets attempted a hit and run, but Josh Thole swung through the pitch and Nick Evans was tagged out for out number one. Thole would later reach on a walk and was replaced by Jason Bay. Josh Satin would come to the plate and during his at bat Francisco Cordero balked and Bay moved over to second base. Satin would later walk after Cordero failed to throw strikes. Cordero would walk the following batter in Jason Pridie for his fourth walk of the inning. Justin Turner came up with the bases loaded and he would hit a liner right to the second baseman for the out and the infielder was able to tag the base to end the game. The Mets fell 5-4 in thirteen innings.
