The New York Mets played the Washington Nationals tonight at Nationals Park starting a three game series. The Mets were coming off a 4-1 series win against the Marlins. The Mets called up pitcher Daniel Ray Herrera, whom they just received in the Francisco Rodriguez deal. They were without two of their players in Josh Thole and Ruben Tejada who left yesterday’s contest with bone bruises.
Tonight the Mets came out swinging the bat because in the first inning David Wright crushed a ball to left-center field driving in three runs on a three-run homer. The Mets jumped out to a early lead and never looked back. Nick Evans would hit a solo homerun in the second inning after R.A. Dickey gave up a run. The Mets would have a 4-1 lead at this point and would tact on two more runs on a Angel Pagan two-run single. This Met team tonight wanted to win this game because they came out swinging the bat. In the seventh inning -Lucas Duda clubbed a solo homerun to give the Mets a 7-3 lead. The homerun marked his eighth of the season.
R.A. Dickey went for the Mets tonight looking to get back to back wins. Dickey would pitch six innings allowing three runs on nine hits. He really pitched well tonight and earned his win. Dickey was given plenty of runs tonight and really settled in. He did allow a two-run homerun, but he did get another quality start. He continues to pitch great for the Mets and now is starting to see some wins coming his way. Hopefully Dickey can close out his season with just wins and get a better looking record. Tonight Dickey proved that he belongs on this team and can be a pivotal piece next season.
Ross Detwiler started for the Nationals and wouldn’t go far in this one. Detwiler would only last three innings allowing six runs on seven hits. His pitches had no movement and the Mets just got hit after hit off of him. He really out the Nationals in a hole early and made it deeper with his terrible pitching. The Nationals would never recover and would go on to lose the game.
Josh Stinson came in for the Mets to pitch the 8th inning to make his Major League debut. Stinson would have a perfect eighth inning with back-to-back strikeouts. He really threw the ball hard and threw strikes. He threw ten pitches and eight of them were strikes. The Mets may have found a great addition to their bullpen for next year. Stinson would pitch the ninth inning as well and would get through it as well. He would leave after going 1.2 for the Mets. He would give up two hits in his outing tonight. Daniel Ray Herrera would come in to get the final out for the Mets as they won 7-3. Herrera also made his Mets debut tonight.
Game Notes:
- David Wright went 2 for 3 with a homerun, double, and three RBI’s.
- Lucas Duda went 2 for 4 with a homerun and two runs scored.
- Nick Evans went 2 for 4 with a homerun.
