The New England Patriots faced off against the Denver Broncos in a late afternoon affair. The Patriots were looking to get their fifth win of the season and end the Broncos six game winning streak. The Patriots were without WR Deion Branch, S Patrick Chung, and RB Shane Vereen.
The first quarter started in a bad way for the Patriots defense as they allowed Tim Tebow to get a rushing touchdown in the Broncos opening drive. The Patriots quickly recovered and Tom Brady found Chad Ochocinco for a 33 yard touchdown pass. This was the first touchdown of the season for Ochocinco. The score was 7-6 in favor of the Patriots and they were hoping to keep the lead. But the Broncos were able to get a touchdown from Lance Ball giving them a 13-7 lead.
The Patriots lost DL Andre Carter to injury as the first quarter dwindled down to the final seconds. The Patriots would announce that Carter would miss the rest of the game with a left leg injury.
The second quarter started off well for the Broncos as they were able to get a 26 yard field goal from Matt Prater, which gave them a 16-7 lead with 13:50 remaining in the quarter. Quickly the Patriots would have the game back in their hands as Tom Brady found Aaron Hernandez for a one yard touchdown. The Patriots found themselves down by two points midway through the second quarter. After the Broncos fumbled the ball, the Patriots were able to get a 21 yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski. The Patriots would later get a one yard touchdown run from Tom Brady, his first rushing touchdown of the season. The lead for the Patriots was 24-16 with 1:17 remaining in the half. But with three seconds remaining in the quarter Stephen Gostkowski hit another field goal from 34 yards out to give the Patriots a 27-16 lead at the half. The Broncos controlled the ball early, but turnovers gave the Patriots the control of the game.
The third quarter saw little scoring except the touchdown run by Danny Woodhead that gave the Patriots a 34-16 lead. The Patriots had the ability to win this game if they were able to stop the Broncos in the fourth quarter, which most teams have been unable to do against the Broncos.
The fourth quarter started the way the Broncos wanted as Tim Tebow was able to get a one yard rushing touchdown bringing his team within eleven. The Patriots would need to score at least one more time to give them the commanding lead and try to hold off the Broncos.
The Patriots would respond as Brady and company would put together a 9 play 80 yard drive capped off by a BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushing touchdown. That drive lasted 4:31 and the Patriots were able to seal the game with that last score. The Broncos would turn the ball over on downs which gave the Patriots a short field with the ability to extend their lead. The Patriots would hand the ball back over to the Broncos after they failed to convert a third down. The Broncos were unable to convert a fourth down and the Patriots would take the ball back to end the game. The Patriots won with a final score of 41-23. And with this win the Patriots have won the AFC East.
